Background

Company Overview

Adobe Flash was a multimedia platform used to create animations, games, and interactive web experiences. It dominated the early internet before being replaced by modern web technologies like HTML5.

Full Bio

Jonathan Gay developed FutureSplash Animator in the mid-1990s, which was later acquired by Macromedia and rebranded as Flash. The tool became a core part of the early web, powering animations, games, and interactive content.

After Adobe acquired Macromedia in 2005, Flash reached peak global adoption. However, increasing concerns around security, performance, and lack of mobile support—especially after public criticism from Steve Jobs—led to its decline. Adobe officially discontinued Flash in 2020.
